Syalon 501 – An Electrically Conductive Ceramic
Syalon 501 is an advanced silicon nitride based sialon ceramic composite offering outstanding mechanical properties combined with electrical conductivity.
Syalon 501 is a composite grade silicon nitride based sialon ceramic developed to provide an electrically conducting advanced ceramic with the traditional silicon nitride properties of high strength, toughness and hardness. This allows Syalon 501 to be electro–discharge machined into more complex shapes than other types of silicon nitride without the need for expensive diamond grinding and any major loss in it's fundamental properties.
Silicon nitride and sialon ceramics are generally electrical insulators. However, the composite nature of Syalon 501 imparts electrical conductivity while maintaining excellent wear resistance. It has found application as extrusion dies, complex moulds for metal and plastic forming and die pressing and as a level sensor in the non-ferrous molten metal industry.
The physical property data for Syalon 501, shown in the table below, although reduced slightly compared to Syalon 101, are still better than those of many aluminas and silicon carbide ceramics. Syalon 501 can be used in air up to around 800°C.
