Advanced Ceramic Sialon Powders

International Syalons manufacture a range of advanced ceramic sialon powders. Theses include 21R Polytype, Beta–Sialon and Alpha–Sialon. Sialons are ceramic alloys of silicon nitride and are characterised by excellent mechanical properties as well as being chemically and thermally stable.

21R Polytype Powder

21R Polytype is a silicon aluminium oxynitride structural modification of aluminium nitride (AlN), having the formulation (SiAl6O2N6). It is a refractory material which is predominately used in sialon formulations. Its principle advantage over AlN is that it is stable in aqueous environments, unlike AlN, which hydrolyses very rapidly in water. This allows sialon formulations containing 21R Polytype to processed by aqueous slip casting or spray drying, for example.

The table below shows the typical composition and particle size for 21R Polytype, which is available in two grades, standard 21R and fine 21RF.

Typical property data for 21R Polytype and 21RF Polytype

Beta–Sialon Powder

Beta–Sialon is a pressureless sinterable powder, which under the right conditions can be sintered into a fully dense beta–sialon body, with physical properties equivalent to those of Syalon 101. It is available in a spray dried ready to press form, containing binders, or a slip castable form, without binders.

The table below shows the typical composition and particle size for spray dried Beta-Sialon powder.

Typical property data for Beta–Sialon

Property Value Units
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) 90 %
Aluminium Nitride (AlN) 1 %
Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3) 6 %
Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) 3 %
D50 < 1.0 μm
Spray dried D50 90 μm

Alpha–Sialon Powder

Alpha–Sialon is a pressureless sinterable powder, which under the right conditions can be sintered into a fully dense alpha–sialon body, with physical properties equivalent to those of Syalon 050. It is available in a spray dried ready to press form, containing binders, or a slip castable form, without binders.

The table below shows the typical composition and particle size for spray dried Alpha–Sialon powder.

Typical property data for Alpha-Sialon

Property Value Units
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) 80 %
Aluminium Nitride (AlN) 12 %
Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3) 6 %
Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) 2 %
